Core knowledge

  • Acids produce H+ ions in aqueous solution; alkalis produce OH- ions.
  • Neutralisation is H+ reacting with OH- to form water.
  • pH below 7 is acidic, pH 7 is neutral, and pH above 7 is alkaline.
  • Strong acids ionise completely; weak acids only partially ionise.
  • Concentrated means lots of acid per volume. Strong and concentrated do not mean the same thing.
